Getting ready to welcome your new furry family member

Getting Ready for your Puppy

Puppy Proof your home!

Ensure that your puppy cannot get into rubbish bins, electric cords or cables, batteries, magnets, medications, toxic plants (i.e. sago palms, peace lily’s and more!), household toxins (i.e. bait/ rodent poisons, chemicals etc.) and high places (i.e. stairs, bed, couch, balcony etc.).

Establish House Rules!

Be consistent in teaching good manners and preventing bad puppy habits. Have EVERYONE in the family discuss and agree on house rules in order to have clear boundaries and expectations for your puppy. Some good rules to establish are:

  • Where is your puppy allowed to go?

  • Introduction to dog language and how to communicate effectively with them.

  • Understanding dog behaviour and the way they learn.

  • Basic cues for lifelong handling (e.g., sit, look, down, recall, wait, walking on lead and leave it)

  • Preparing your puppy for handling (e.g., by vets, groomers and family or friends)

  • Troubleshooting toilet training, biting, jumping, barking etc.

  • Basic nutrition and enrichment for your dog (e.g., diet, preventatives and breed based enrichment.)

  • Desensitisation to potential phobias (i.e., vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, mail man etc.)

  • How to prevent separation anxiety

  • Discuss or plan your pets desexing
